More photos

I decided to take a trip to Brighton to explore the idea of 'The cost of living' and how i could implement this theme into a series of photos. The image above is a rather cliched, post card image but i was attracted to the formational paring on the loungers. I feel this relates to the idea of the cost of living, in a literally, economical way. The idea that it was quite a sunny day and this tourist destination was rather empty and secluded.

I feel this image relates to the idea of 'th cost of living' in more of a physical cost/damage. You can see the wear and tear, rust and scale and decolouration of this boat and i feel with it now being placed iscolated on the beach it suggest it can not function as it did before and has paid the cost' for outdoor, urban life.

In reference to both the image above and below of the bumber cars, i was again attracted to their organised and neat framework. Much like the 'deck chair' image above, the tone i get from this image is one of iscolation, lonliness. Likewise, i feel this mood is caused by the ecomonic crisis of todays society and how the literal 'cost' of living has prevented these bumber cars getting the attention and fun living they were use to.

Following on the theme of the literal meaning of 'cost', like the other image the stacked deck stairs are there due to the lack of tourist expendiature in todays economic climate. I feel a sense of empathy looking at this image due to the sense of expiredness and unwantedness of the deck stairs all just thrown on top of one another. With my experience of seeing Brighton beach so busy, this is an unusual and unnatural state for the deck charis to be in, and it has been caused by this literal 'cost' of living. I had to up the contrast in post production as i didnt like how dark the original photo was.

Getting started

After my first practical workshop in Photography, as instructed i searched through my own archive of photos and looked through other peoples work in their Flickr accounts, to find some images that i felt had an impact upon me. Below are a few images that i came across in my search; The first four images are all photos taken myself on a digital camera with no post enhancements, whilst the remaining our images by others taken on SLR cameras.

All be it that this may be an extremly randomly taken photo, taken whilst i was experimenting with my camera, the movement, energy and warnness within this photo appeals to me. I enjoy the close range of the depth of field, the foreground of the picture captures every crease and detail within the material, whilst the background is out of depth but the warness and blur of the lights creates a sense of movement that i feel contrast well with the foreground.
This holiday snap fills me with joy every time i look at it. The angle at which the photo is taken creates a sense of a journey leading the viewer up the stalk to the tip of tree, capturing the expansive leaves mingling within the sky. I feel the emotive resonse to this image is captured due to the warm and welcoming natural imagery.

At first i felt the lack of exposure would ruin this image, however, once i sat and looked at it, i feel the lower exposure suits the mood of the image. Taken just after dusk, i like how the contrast of colour between the people and the sea creates a warming tone. The purple, slighlty sepia tint created to the sun adds to this warmth and suggests an initmate connection between the two people.

My views on this image are completely torn. I really enjoy and am pleased with the powerful contrast of the light that  i captured in the sky. I feel the power of the bright light emerging through the deep dark clouds creates a pleasant image, however, i am frustrated that the foreground is too dark.  This is a learning curve for me to ensure i take more than one attempt of the same setting in the future to ensure i capture the correct balance within the whole image.
